Recently, Associate Professor Wang Qiangqiang from the School of Education (School of Teacher Education) of Huzhou University published an academic paper titled “The Influence and Mechanisms of Quantity and Ordinal Cues on the SNARC Effect” as the first author in Acta Psychologica Sinica, one of the most authoritative journals in the field of psychology in China.

The study primed quantity information by sequentially presenting different numbers of letters, so that the letters contained both quantitative and ordinal information within the experimental context, without covariation between the two. By effectively resolving the confounding issue of covariation between quantity and order, the study tasked participants with completing different cognitive tasks to systematically explore how quantity and ordinal cues affect the SNARC (Spatial-Numerical Association of Response Codes) effect and the underlying mechanisms. The findings demonstrated that the SNARC effect can be induced by both quantity and ordinal information, and that their influence is task-dependent. When tasks require prioritizing quantity information, quantity and ordinal cues interact with each other. However, when the tasks are unrelated to either quantity or order, ordinal cues alone can still trigger the SNARC effect, while quantity cues become less influential. These results effectively disentangle the ATOM model, the ordinal theory, and the dual-route theory of quantity and order. The study supports and refines the dual-route theory by revealing the complex interactions between quantity and ordinal cues under different task conditions, offering significant implications for both theoretical development and practical applications.

Co-sponsored by the Chinese Psychological Society and the Institute of Psychology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Acta Psychologica Sinica is recognized as the most prestigious psychology journal in China. Associate Professor Wang Qiangqiang’s publication in this journal significantly enhances Huzhou University’s academic visibility and influence in the field of psychology.

In recent years, to support the application for doctoral programs, strengthen discipline development, and promote research outcomes, the Academy of Humanities and Social Sciences of Huzhou University has been actively encouraging faculty members to root their research in China’s local context and prioritize publishing in high-quality domestic journals. The efforts have resulted in a number of representative and impactful scholarly achievements.
