Recently, the China Language and Script Digital Museum (“Yubo”), meticulously created by the Ministry of Education and the National Language Commission, has launched a batch of multi-type, multi-modal digital language and cultural resources simultaneously on its website and mobile app. Among these resources, the innovative achievement “Chinese Character Time Machine” developed by Huzhou university’s “Tracing Chinese Characters” team was successfully included. It serves as a new intelligent engine for the inheritance and dissemination of Chinese character culture, and has been widely reported by China Education Television, the Ministry of Education's News Office, and other media outlets.

　　The newly launched resources are reported to be categorized into seven main sectors of the “Yubo,” with the “Chinese Character Time Machine” featured the headline in the language intelligence sector. Users can utilize this tool to photograph or handwrite characters for intelligent recognition of ancient and modern Chinese scripts, including Oracle Bone Script, Bronze Script, Large Seal Script, Small Seal Script, Clerical Script, Regular Script, Cursive Script, and Running Script. This innovative tool allows users to deeply understand the evolution of Chinese characters. It not only enables exploration of the historical and contemporary forms of Chinese characters but also injects new vitality into the transmission and innovation of Chinese character culture.

　　The “Tracing Chinese Characters” team, guided by Professor Qi Hengnian from the School of Information Engineering, comprises core students Yang Hao, Wang Zhaojiang, Lin Lu, Pan Yumo, Xin Qiuyi, and Ye Jiabin, etc. Over the past three years, the team has collected, organized, and enhanced data to build a massive database of ancient character samples. Based on this extensive database and by leveraging existing lightweight network model architectures, they designed a lightweight deep learning network for the recognition of eight styles of Chinese characters, creating a recognition engine capable of accurately identifying over 8,000 commonly used ancient characters. According to tests conducted by the Zhejiang Electronic Information Products Inspection and Research Institute, the comprehensive recognition rate exceeds 94.2%. This achievement was highly praised by Tian Xuejun, vice chairman of the the Education, Science, Culture and Public Health Committee of the National People’s Congress, during a recent inspection and research visit. With a simple touch or selection of an unfamiliar character, users can quickly access its meaning and evolution. This achievement not only demonstrates the power of technology but also serves as a bridge for the dissemination of Chinese character culture, ensuring its vitality in the digital age.
